What is Brigadeiro?

Brigadeiro is a traditional Brazilian dessert, made from chocolate and condensed milk. Because Brazilians are very creative, and innovative people, they have been reinventing brigadeiros (that’s how it’s pronounced :“bri-ga-day-row”) in an amazing variety of flavors and high-quality chocolate, making it a whole new and exotic version of the traditional one.

It is important to know that it was named after a presidential candidate in Brazil in 1946, Eduardo Gomez. He did not win the presidency, but the people won the delicious recipe, a forever favorite. The brigadeiro was created by a woman named Heloisa Nabuco de Oliveira, during the first national election, the same year women were eligible to vote.

A brigadeiro is generally shaped into small balls covered in chocolate sprinkles and placed in a small cupcake liner. The mixture may also be poured into a small container, and eaten with a spoon, and this is known as a “brigadeiro de colher” (literally, “spoon brigadeiro”). Brigadeiro can be found now in different countries as a result of Brazilian migration.
